Elite Review: Wii Virtual Console Roundup pt. 1

One of my favourite parts of the Wii is the Virtual Console where I can download games from older systems. Here are some quick reviews of some of the games I've bought:

Super Mario 2

This game gets a lot of grief because it's not a proper Mario game. Pfft I say. Who cares if it's a completely different game if it's fun. For the unaware, Nintendo just replaced the sprites in a Japanese game called "Doki Doki Panic".

So you have this weird game where you're picking turnips out of the ground and throwing things at transvestite Dino-birds. It's like Mario had one too many mushrooms the first go around.

Anyway, this was one of my fave games growing up and it's aged really well. B+.

Super Mario 3

Super Mario 2 is great, but this was probably my favourite game growing up. You honestly have no idea how much time I spent trying to fly everywhere I possibly could to find secrets.

The one thing I noticed is that this game gets really really hard. The first 6 worlds are doable but halfway through world 7, it's just cruel. And World 8 is just plain cheap. You have levels where you have a small spotlight around you and can't see anything else in the level. Thank god for those clouds.

Just like SMB2, this game is just as good as I remembered it. A+++.

Ninja Gaiden 2

Speaking of difficult, I don't think there is a series of games that I cannot beat that I love as much as the Ninja Gaidens. I spent far too much time with the first one back in the day to warrant a purchase but this one was only played sporadically when I would rent it. So I wanted to give it a proper playthrough.

As of press time, I am on the last level. Just to mess with me, the game has a 3 part boss and if... I mean, when I die I'm thrown back to the first floor. There haven't been enough masochistic moments in my life lately where I've wanted to actually try to get through this level so, for all intents and purposes, let's just say I beat it.

Solid B.

Megaman 2

It's getting to the point where I can beat this game in under an hour. I have the levels, weaknesses, enemy patterns, music etc. memorized. This game comes out when I need an ego boost after a session of Ninja Gaiden.

A for the nostalgia. B- because it's just too easy. That being said, Megaman 1 and 3 are really hard so this is a good entry into the series.

More to come.
